Fertility Abroad? Here's My Experience with Reproclinic in Barcelona
Let’s face it—navigating fertility options is a full-time job. Add in the idea of doing it in a different country? That becomes a whole thing.
When I first started exploring egg freezing abroad, I had a million questions, not a ton of time, and zero patience for clinics that either ghost you or bombard you with generic PDFs. Enter: Reproclinic, based in Barcelona.
I didn’t end up going with Repro, but I did seriously consider them and had several rounds of correspondence with their (lovely) team. Here are my thoughts.
First Impressions: Human (at last!)
The initial contact came through email. Unlike some clinics that feel overly formal or robotic, Reproclinic’s tone was warm, personal, and genuinely helpful—a serious reprieve from London clinics.
I was contacted by Jana Lozano, one of the IVF coordinators. She quickly became my go-to contact, introducing herself as someone who works with English-speaking patients specifically. Out of the gate, she explained that I’d have a consistent medical team: a dedicated coordinator, a doctor, and a medical assistant—all fluent in English.
Again, this was a breath of fresh air. I couldn’t believe how most London clinics switch up nurses and don’t even assign a coordinator, which can lead to incorrect prescriptions and serious communication gaps. Reproclinic does not mess around in this regard, and that immediately calmed my anxiety about doing anything abroad. You don’t want to feel like you're emailing a black hole or being passed around a call centre (which seems to be the London standard).
Clarity Without Pressure
I should first point out that I considered going abroad for cost reasons. Prices for egg freezing in London can be astronomical—and don’t even get me started on the hidden fees.
What I liked about Reproclinic was that they sent me a transparent price list up front. No vague “starting from £X” nonsense. Their egg freezing package is clearly outlined and includes:
One egg retrieval cycle with vitrification
One year of storage
Monitoring and medical team support
The total cost of the egg freezing procedure itself was quoted at €2,700. They also mentioned a €200 discount (bringing the total to €2,500) if you booked by a specific date, thanks to their collaboration with the International Fertility Alliance.
Additional costs:
Medication: Estimated at €1,500 (if purchased in Barcelona)
Initial consultation: €80, or €50 if paid on the same day as booking (this fee is deducted from your final cost if you proceed)
That said, they don’t offer payment plans, which could be a barrier if you’re trying to plan this around a monthly budget. But even with flights and accommodation added in, it’s still significantly cheaper than London clinics—where costs easily climb to £6,000+ for the same services.
The Process: Surprisingly Doable
If the idea of hopping on a plane mid-cycle makes you break into a cold sweat, don’t worry—it’s not like that.
One of the biggest concerns I had was: Do I need to be in Barcelona for two weeks while on hormones…possibly alone?
Thankfully, no. Here’s how they broke it down:
Initial consultation: Can be done in person or remotely (Zoom, Skype, Teams—whatever you prefer).
Scans during stimulation: Can be done in your home country, coordinated with Reproclinic’s team.
Travel to Barcelona: Just once, for 3–4 days for the egg retrieval itself.
This hybrid approach is honestly ideal if you’re based in the UK and trying to keep disruption minimal (i.e. continue to work, etc.). Theoretically, you might not even need to book time off.
I also have to say—the consultation felt absolutely worth it. They were so, so kind, and I loved that I had an all-female team who were confident, smart, and warm. There was zero pressure. Just support. It felt like I was in such good hands.
The Vibe: One Patient, One Team
Reproclinic promotes something they call the “One Patient – One Team” model. It’s not just a tagline—Jana explained that I would have the same doctor (Dr. Belén Marqueta - who seemed like an angel and bad ass all packaged in one) and coordinator throughout the process. If you’ve ever had the experience of repeating your story five times to different people in a system, you know how valuable this is.
Continuity matters—especially when hormones and emotions are involved (or, let’s be real, with any healthcare situation).
They also emphasised their integrative, holistic approach, which includes psychological support, acupuncture, and nutritional guidance. While I didn’t explore these in depth, I found it reassuring that they take emotional wellbeing seriously. Fertility isn’t just a physical process—it’s mental, emotional, and sometimes existential.
And honestly, the contrast with London clinics couldn’t be starker. In the UK, I felt like I was on a conveyer belt. At Repro, I felt like I’d be seen.
Their Reputation
Reproclinic isn’t some pop-up shop tucked down a side alley. They’ve got over 20 years of experience, and a strong reputation for handling complex cases, including patients who’ve had failed cycles elsewhere.
They’re founding members of the International Fertility Alliance, contribute to scientific research, and have published success rates online (which is more than I can say for some clinics I contacted in the UK).
They’re also used to working with international patients, especially from the UK, so nothing about your situation will feel unusual to them. It didn’t feel like I’d be a guinea pig—they felt seasoned and steady.
The Only Downsides?
Payment Plans: The lack of instalment options could be a deal-breaker. Egg freezing is a big investment, and even just the ability to split payments would make it more accessible.
Cost vs. Other EU Clinics: They’re not the absolute cheapest in Europe, but I wouldn’t expect them to be, given their personalised touch and high standards.
The Verdict
If you’re exploring fertility treatment abroad and want somewhere that’s efficient, kind, and doesn’t make you feel like just another file number, I highly recommend checking out Reproclinic.
They strike a strong balance between cost transparency, personalised care, and logistical ease—three things that are surprisingly hard to find all in one place.
For someone like me—based in London, short on time, and cautious about the whole process—they offered the kind of support I didn’t even realise I needed.
TL;DR – Should You Consider Reproclinic?
✅ YES if you want clear pricing, strong English-speaking support, minimal travel time, and a warm, caring team.
🟨 MAYBE if you need payment plans or want a high-end luxury vibe (they’re professional, but not five-star spa chic).
❌ NO only if you're absolutely set on staying in the UK or want everything in-person.
Whether you’re egg freezing, exploring IVF, or just gathering information—you deserve a clinic that sees you, hears you, and answers your damn emails.
Reproclinic did that for me.
